Claude Code Statusline Builder
A Claude Code statusline is a small script that Claude Code runs after each update and prints at the bottom of your terminal, fed with session data as JSON. Pick your segments below, check the live preview, then copy the settings.json block and the script; nothing you click leaves your browser.

1. Add this to ~/.claude/settings.json
The clock segment adds refreshInterval so the time updates without new messages.
2. Save this script as ~/.claude/statusline.sh
Then make it executable:
chmod +x ~/.claude/statusline.shThe Bash script needs jq. Install it with brew install jq or sudo apt install jq.
How to set up a Claude Code statusline in 3 steps
- 1
Save the script
Copy the script from the builder into ~/.claude/statusline.sh (or statusline.js for Node). On macOS and Linux run chmod +x on the file. For Bash you need jq.
- 2
Edit settings.json
Open ~/.claude/settings.json for all projects, or .claude/settings.json in one project, and add the statusLine block. Keep the rest of the file as it is.
- 3
Restart and check
Start a new Claude Code session. The line appears at the bottom after the first update. If not, run claude --debug and look for statusline errors.
Common errors and fixes
- Nothing shows up
- The script is not executable or does not print to stdout. Run chmod +x and test it with: echo '{}' | ~/.claude/statusline.sh
- jq: command not found
- Install jq or switch the builder to the Node script, which needs no extra tools.
- Empty values at the start
- Some fields such as context or cost are null early in a session. The scripts fall back to 0 or hide the segment.
- Statusline disabled
- disableAllHooks in your settings also turns off the statusline, and Claude Code only runs it in trusted workspaces.
- Windows paths
- Claude Code runs the command through Git Bash, or PowerShell without it. Use forward slashes in paths, or use the Node script.

Claude Code statusline: FAQ
What data can a Claude Code statusline show?
Claude Code sends JSON to your script with the model, working folder, Git worktree, session cost, duration, lines added and removed, context window usage, effort level, output style and, on Pro and Max plans, your 5-hour and 7-day rate limits. The builder covers the most useful of these fields.
How often does the statusline update?
Claude Code runs your script after updates such as new messages, debounced to 300 milliseconds. If you show a clock, set refreshInterval in seconds so the line also refreshes while nothing happens; the minimum is 1.
Can the statusline use colors and several lines?
Yes. ANSI color codes work, every line your script prints becomes its own row, and OSC 8 links are supported. The builder writes one line with optional colors.
Do I need jq?
Only for the Bash script, which reads the JSON with jq. The Node script parses the JSON itself and has no dependencies besides Node.js, which Claude Code users usually have installed.
Does this tool send my settings anywhere?
No. The builder runs completely in your browser. It makes no network requests while you click, and the generated files are only copied to your clipboard when you press Copy.
