How to export a Claude chat

1Share the chatIn Claude, open the conversation, click Share at the top right and create a public link. Copy it.

2Paste the linkPaste the link into the field above and click Load chat. You see a preview with every message.

Why export Claude chats at all?

Claude conversations often contain the best version of an idea: a finished prompt, a spec, code, a decision with its reasoning. In the chat list it gets buried. As a file it becomes part of your documentation, your knowledge base or your project folder.

Exporting also protects you. A chat can be deleted, an account can change, a team plan can end. A Markdown or PDF copy stays readable on any device, without a login.

What exactly gets exported

Every message of the shared snapshot, in order, with your prompts and Claude's answers. Code blocks stay code blocks. If the snapshot contains them, you can include attachment text, tool calls, thinking and timestamps with the switches above the preview.

Important: a share link shows the state of the chat at the moment it was shared. If you continued the conversation afterwards, update the share in Claude and load the link again.

Exporting all chats at once

Claude can send you a complete data export: Settings → Privacy → Export data. You get a ZIP by email that contains conversations.json. Upload it in the Full data export tab and the tool lists every chat. With Pro you download all of them as Markdown, HTML or JSON files in one ZIP. The file never leaves your browser.

Claude Code sessions

In Claude Code you can save the current session yourself with the /export command, as a file or to the clipboard. For conversations from claude.ai, the desktop app and the mobile app, this tool is the faster route.

Questions about exporting Claude chats

Is the Claude Chat Export free?

Yes. Exporting a shared chat as Markdown, text or HTML is free and needs no account. Pro costs 4.90 € per month or 39 € per year and adds PDF, Word, JSON, the handover file, bulk export and the converter for your complete data export.

Can I export a private chat without a share link?

Not by link. The tool can only read chats that you shared publicly. For private chats, request the official data export in Claude under Settings → Privacy → Export data and upload the ZIP here. That works without sharing anything.

Do you store my chats?

No. Shared chats are loaded once and sent straight to your browser, nothing is saved on our server. Your data export is processed entirely in your browser and never uploaded.

How do I export a Claude chat to PDF?

Load the chat and click PDF. A print view opens; choose Save as PDF as the printer. The layout keeps speakers, code blocks and line breaks.

Which format is best for Notion or Obsidian?

Markdown. Headings, lists and code blocks are kept, and both apps import .md files directly.

Can I move a chat to another Claude account?

There is no official transfer. The reliable way is the handover file: it packs the whole conversation with an instruction so that a new chat, another account or another AI continues where you left off.

Is this an official Anthropic tool?
